It’s no secret that winters can get very cold, and most people want to be able to stay nice and cozy in their beds as much as possible during the winter season. When your bed feels incredibly cold due to the cold temperatures, it isn’t going to be as pleasant as you would like for it to be.
There are many people who love making use of electric blankets to warm their beds during the coldest months of the year. These electric blankets do indeed work well to make your bed warm and comfortable even when it is freezing outside.
However, not everyone has an electric blanket, and some people feel that they make things a bit too warm overall. If you’d like to avoid using an electric blanket, then you might be looking for alternative ways to keep your bed warm.
You will have quite a few options that you can consider when it comes to warming your bed. Read on to get information about keeping your bed warm without an electric blanket.
1 – Use a Warm Duvet or Comforter
The first thing that you should do is go out and buy a very warm comforter or duvet. Sometimes big heavy comforters will be referred to as duvets, but the language doesn’t really necessarily matter.
What you’re looking for is a very thick comforter or duvet that is going to be comfortable to use while also keeping you warm. If you live in a cold area, then it’s likely wise to keep a heavy comforter tucked away somewhere that you can get out when things start to get frigid.
The basic idea is to be able to get under the covers and feel significantly warmer once you do. If you have a thick comforter or duvet that you can utilize, then you should be able to warm up in your bed very fast.
Those who don’t have thick comforters or duvets will still be able to get similar results by using regular blankets. If one blanket isn’t doing the trick, then you can certainly layer the blankets and sleep using two of them.
It isn’t uncommon at all to see people with two or three blankets on their beds during the winter months. You have to do what you have to do to stay warm when things get super cold.
Having more blankets on your bed can potentially be relaxing as well. Some people feel that the extra weight from having more blankets or thicker blankets is calming, and this is one of the reasons why weighted blankets are used to help people with anxiety try to get some rest.
Just using warmer blankets is one of the most cost-effective options that you have for warming your bed without an electric blanket. That doesn’t mean it’s the only option that you have to consider, though.
2 – Consider What Blanket Materials You’re Using
When it comes to keeping your bed warm, not all blanket materials are going to do the same job. If you’re using a blanket that is made of silky materials, then it might wind up feeling too cool.
Thankfully, there are lots of excellent blanket materials for you to consider utilizing. The two most popular types of winter blanket materials are definitely wool and fleece.
You can find all sorts of warm wool blankets that will help you to feel comfortable in bed when it’s very cold. Fleece blankets can be excellent as well, and most of them are going to be cotton fleece.
The reason why these work so much better than blankets made from other materials is that they have fibers that curl, and this winds up trapping your body heat in the blanket. You’ll be able to act as your own space heater under the blanket, and you’re going to have no problem warming up fast.
Simply changing out your normal spring and summer blankets for something with better material will really help you out. If you want to enjoy a warmer time in your bed during the winter, then you’re going to love changing out your blankets.
Finding nice wool and cotton fleece blankets shouldn’t cost you too much money overall. This is a highly recommended step, and you could even use a warm blanket underneath a comforter or duvet if you’re so inclined.
3 – Traditional Heaters
Traditional heaters can help you out when you feel like your bedroom is too cold, too. Some homes just use simple forced heat to heat the entire house during the winter months, and this typically works just fine.
You might find that certain rooms in your house are still colder than others, though. This can happen because of drafty windows, drafts coming in from under the door, and many other reasons.
To battle issues like this, you’re going to want to make sure that you heat your room that you’re sleeping in better than usual. There are a few ways to go about doing this, but many people just use standard traditional heaters.
If you don’t live in an incredibly cold part of the world, then you might simply use space heaters to heat your home. These simple heaters are usually electric in nature, and you just set them up where you want them to be.
You can choose to use space heaters in conjunction with normal home heating methods as well. If you find that your bedroom is a bit too cold for your liking during the winter months, then using a space heater might give you the extra heat that you need.
Set a heater up in a safe spot where you can have it keep your bed nice and warm. Some people will place a heater on a table that isn’t too far from the bed, but you don’t want to put it anywhere where it could become a fire hazard.
Another thing to consider is that you might be able to heat your bedroom more using standard home heating methods. Some homes allow you to adjust the thermostat in specific rooms, and this would work out very nicely.
Setting the temperature to be a few degrees warmer in your bedroom might do the trick nicely. Of course, this all depends on whether you have a modern home heating setup, and what features are available to you.
4 – Wear Warmer Clothes to Bed
This next option might seem obvious, but some people get really stuck on wearing next to nothing to bed. There certainly are lots of people who like to sleep in very little clothing or nothing at all, and that’s likely just fine during warmer months.
It’s just that, during the winter months, you’re going to be dealing with much colder temperatures. Sleeping without a shirt on when it’s so cold might not be ideal, and the same thing can be said for pants.
Wearing warmer clothes to bed is a great idea that can help you to feel warmer in bed even when it’s very cold outside. You could easily go out and buy some warm pajamas that will make you feel very comfortable while you’re sleeping.
The only reason you might wish to avoid this is if you’re one of those people who can’t sleep while wearing too many clothes. There are people who feel that way, and it’s up to you to decide if this is good advice for your situation.
Just consider how much warmer you will be if you choose to wear things such as pajama pants, flannel pajama shirts, and wool socks. You won’t be anywhere near as cold because you’re wearing clothing items that will heat you up nicely.
That can work very well when paired with thick blankets, comforters, or duvets, too. Sometimes the best method for heating up your bed without an electric blanket is really just going to involve heating yourself up.
If you feel that thick pajamas are too much and that they make you too warm, then perhaps go with lighter clothing items. Going from sleeping with no shirt to sleeping in a standard t-shirt is still going to be warmer.
5 – Consider Cuddling up with Your Partner
Body heat can be a very effective way to heat yourself up during the coldest nights. If you find yourself feeling a bit too chilly even with the advice above, then you could choose to cuddle up a bit closer to your partner.
If you have a spouse or a partner who lives with you, then cuddling up next to them is going to help you to get warmer. Some people really like sleeping while snuggling with their significant others, and this can be especially nice during the winter.
Getting close to your partner can even be something that will make you feel better and help you to relieve stress. If you have someone in your life who can be your cuddle buddy during the winter months, then it could be a fantastic way to keep your bed warm all winter long.
Of course, there are many people who are single or who live alone. If you go to sleep alone at night, then you might still have some options to consider.
Some people will allow their pets to sleep in bed with them because they care about their pets a lot. If you don’t mind the pet hair and other potential issues, then cuddling up with your dogs or cats could help to warm the bed, too.
6 – Use a Hot Water Bottle
If you’re looking for an old school tip that will help you to warm the bed, then you could use a hot water bottle. Have you seen old movies or cartoons where people are sick in bed at hospitals?
In those old movies and cartoons, you’ll often see people with hot water bottles on their heads to try to warm them up when they have the chills. You might not see a lot of people using things like this now, but it’s still a viable way to warm yourself up when you’re very cold.
You don’t need to place the hot water bottle on your forehead to get good results either. In fact, many people have been using hot water bottles during the winter for years by placing them at the end on their beds.
The basic idea is to use the hot water bottle as a type of “foot warmer” that will keep your feet nice and toasty while you drift to sleep. Many people have trouble sleeping when they have cold feet, but you won’t have to worry about this any longer if you choose to use hot water bottles.
You could easily fill up multiple hot water bottles and place them in your bed at specific points. It’s up to you to decide how practical this is going to be as a solution to your issues, but it is something that people do.
There are even people who sort of cuddle up to the hot water bottle so that they can enjoy its warmth. Hot water bottles are quite affordable, and it’s not going to take much of an effort to fill them with hot water before bed each night.
Now you know about many different methods for warming your bed during the winter months. You have a lot of options, and it isn’t completely necessary to go out and buy an electric blanket.
Simply using a warm comforter or duvet might be just what you need to keep things toasty warm. Using blankets with warmer materials might make all the difference in the world, too.
Having this practical advice to follow should make it easier for you to figure out a good solution. You might wish to use one or two of these ideas in conjunction to get really good results.
It’s worth noting that electric heating blankets can be great to own as well, and you don’t have to shy away from using them. If you’d like to warm the bed efficiently, then buying an electric heating blanket is a very good idea.
You now know that you have other things that you can do to get similar results. Using a hot water bottle actually works almost as well as an electric heating blanket in certain ways.
Enjoy your bed to the fullest no matter how cold it is outside. You have the information that you need, and now it is simply time to pick which things you want to do to make your bed comfortable and warm.
