Lots of people use air mattresses as extra beds for guests when they stay over for the night. You might have one or two of them that you bring out for your kids’ friends when they’re staying over for a special occasion.

These lightweight, convenient beds can be worth keeping around but many wonder whether they’re going to last very long.

Can an air mattress burst if you aren’t careful? Read on to learn about air mattresses, whether or not they can burst, and what you should be doing to take care of them.

If you get the right information, then you shouldn’t have nearly as hard of a time using an air mattress without having to worry.

You Can Pop an Air Mattress

It is most definitely possible to pop an air mattress if you are not careful. Most air mattresses on the market aren’t made out of incredibly durable materials.

Even some of the air mattresses that cost a little more money can be popped if you don’t take the right precautions.

Some people get worried about whether an air mattress will pop if you try to fill it with air too much. This is technically possible but it’s unlikely to happen with how modern air mattresses are designed.

Essentially, you would have to be able to keep pumping the air into the mattress so that the materials would be under such a strain that they would fall apart at the seams.

What would be more likely to happen is that your air pump would slip out of the valve area where you’re putting the air in. They design the air mattresses to keep them from doing this for the most part.

You’re much more likely to have an air mattress that will cause the nozzle to slip out than ever see it pop from being inflated too much.

What Types of Things Can Pop an Air Mattress?

Lots of things could cause you to pop your air mattress if you aren’t careful. One of the most common things that will pop an air mattress will be an animal.

If you have pets in your home, then you will need to keep them away from the air mattress so that they won’t poke holes in it.

Even if your pets won’t bite the air mattress, they might step on it at some point in time. Pets have sharp claws or nails that are going to be very likely to scratch or poke holes in the air mattress.

This is why you need to be very careful about using air mattresses when you have pets around.

You could wind up popping the air mattress yourself if you don’t trim your nails short too. Most decent air mattresses are made out of durable enough material to withstand an errant hangnail but it’s still best to be careful. Anything that could be sharp is a potential danger to the air mattress.

It’s best to watch what you’re doing near your air mattress when you’re using it. Don’t eat near the air mattress and try to keep sharp things away from it.

If you only bring the air mattress out when it’s time to actually sleep, then you’re going to have an easier time keeping it in good shape.

Store Your Air Mattress Safely

When you aren’t using your air mattress, it is going to be best to ensure that you’re storing it safely. This will give you the chance to keep it out of the way so that it can’t get harmed.

You want to put it in some type of bag or box that will keep it from getting poked or scraped by anything sharp.

Lots of air mattresses will come with nylon bags or boxes that are capable of protecting them. You’re supposed to put the air mattress inside of whatever bag or box came with your package.

This is pretty convenient for storing the air mattress and it shouldn’t be hard to find a spot for this in your closet somewhere.

As long as you’re being careful, you shouldn’t have too much trouble keeping an air mattress in good shape. You just have to take the right precautions while being sure not to leave your air mattress sitting out for too long.

One of the biggest reasons why people have their air mattresses burst is that they forget to put them away after everyone gets up in the morning.

What Happens When an Air Mattress Gets a Hole in it?

When your air mattress gets a hole in it, you’ll likely have a harder time getting it to inflate.

Most often, you’ll find that a small hole being poked into an air mattress won’t cause a sudden, violent action. You won’t see the air mattress suddenly burst and make a huge noise.

What actually happens is that the air will just start to slowly escape from the air mattress. Sometimes people will notice that they wake up in the morning and the air mattress is mostly deflated underneath them.

This means that the air mattress has a hole and you’re going to need to find that hole if you want to keep using the air mattress.

It’s possible to patch a small hole or two in an air mattress so that it can keep being used. Some people use certain types of tape to fix these holes but you’ll need to find where the hole is located. When the holes are tiny, this can be a bit of a problem.

One of the easiest methods is to go ahead and fill the air mattress with water. It’ll become obvious where the water is leaking from pretty quickly.

The downside to this is that you’d have to let the air mattress dry out and this might keep you from being able to use it for a while.

Use Your Air Mattress with Confidence

Now that you know so much more about air mattresses, it should be easier to use them. You can feel confident in your ability to keep your air mattress safe now.

Just be mindful of how you’re storing your air mattress while being sure to take the right precautions while you’re actually using it as well.
